Collaborative Leadership

In 1864, two storm-ravaged ships were hurled onto the unforgiving rocks of the same island, five hundred kilometres south of New Zealand. 

One crew built a shelter, hunted seals and eventually built a boat to sail back to safety.  The other descended into desperation and cannibalism.

What determined their very different outcomes?  Was it circumstances? Was it luck?

Or was it collaborative leadership?
